Counseling or Coaching?

I often have people ask me this question: How do I know if I should hire a coach or a therapist? The answer is all about timing! Are you at a point in your life where you need to process something, understand it’s meaning and it’s impact on your daily functioning? Do you need to slow down a bit and ponder issues with an objective listener who can support and guide you towards resolution, growth and improved mental health? If so, the timing is right for counseling. Online counseling is a safe, convenient and non-threatening way to address issues that are holding you back: anxiety, depression, ineffective communication skills and negative thinking are common entry points for seeking counseling. Therapy can help you slow down, de-stress and eliminate negative thinking and habits.

The time to choose a coach is when you are sailing along and ready to set and achieve goals. Perhaps you’re not moving ahead as quickly as you’d like or you have a vision but aren’t sure where to begin. Coaching can help you get clear on your goals, set actions steps to achieve them, build in powerful accountability measures and help you eliminate obstacles and move forward. Coaching is about finding the expert in you, the wisdom that’s already there and beginning to trust it!

Just to be clear, as far as therapy and coaching are concerned, one is not better than the other. They are both useful modalities and it is wise to know what the timing is in your life that has you seeking services. Do you need to slow down a bit and think through some things or do you need to amp it up and reach for the next chapter? It is also not uncommon to reach a point in coaching where something comes up that is better suited for therapy. Or you may reach a point in therapy when you realize you are done with processing and ready to move toward goal setting with a coach.
